Trending in the 1920s and 30s, the schoolhouse block became popular because teaching was a prestigious and high paying opportunity available to women. My hope is that my block will spread the message of the importance of teachers, and the currently underappreciated and underpaid profession. In addition, the schoolhouse reminds me of the schoolhouse that my great grandmother attended. While the building is still standing to this day, the building has been neglected, similar to educators today. Like John G. Fee, who founded Berea College from a singular schoolhouse, we need to prioritize the education of the next generation and that starts with valuing educators and the hard work they accomplish.”
